Meet our Product Manager: Elise Aplin

Who are the humans behind Clover? This week we chat our Product Manager Elise about microbiology, Disney Music, and her Olympic Aspirations.

Elise! Tell us a bit about you?

I’m a Gemini. I like long walks on the beach… wait is this the stuff you want to know?

I get car sick. I have incredibly neat handwriting, but I’m terrible at drawing. I like to run, a lot. I’ve been running since I was 6 years old. My favourite is the steeplechase, which involves running, hurdles, and leaping over water.

Before Clover, I worked as a consultant at ThoughtWorks working with clients in both the financial industry and tech startups.

What do you do at Clover?

I’m the Product Manager at Clover, which basically means I make sure we’re building the right features that make a meaningful impact on our customer’s lives.

Day to day can be anything from ordering swag for our beta users, chatting with customers on live chat, and keeping the engineering team on their toes with my requests.

I recently got our office phones installed and working, which is more complex and a bigger accomplishment than it sounds.

What’s the best bit of advice you’ve ever received?

“Never half ass two things. Whole ass one thing”

That’s from Ron Swanson, Parks and Rec. I don’t know him personally, but I think we’d get along.

You’re in charge of the office Spotify Account for a week. What are we listening to?

Disney Music.

… For serious?

Yep, the soundtracks.

Hahah. Right. Ok, what are you currently addicted to on Netflix?

Anything Marvel. I’m pretty sure I could be an Agent of Shield if they were recruiting. And definitely Parks and Rec. I’ve been told that I’m Leslie Knope.

Biggest financial lesson you’ve learned?

Generally I’ve been pretty responsible, but knowing what I know now, I should have put my savings into an ETF–or some way of making my money work for me. As Mr. Warren Buffet says “Cash is a bad investment over time.” ¯_(ツ)_/ ¯

What’s something about you not many people know?

I used to work as a microbiologist. I still have a collection of plush toys of various viruses and bacteria.

Also, I was on a TV show once. “Million Dollar Minute”. I mostly heckled the current champ. I didn’t win any money, but the host did say to me “I think you should be hosting the show”, which is pretty much like winning.

You’re bored. What website do you magically end up at?

I’m trying to learn German, so I spend a bit of time on DuoLingo.

Life Goals?

Does learning German count?

Someday I’d love to go to the South Pole. The North Pole scares me, because it’s just ice floating on water. But the South Pole has a land mass and it has penguins, so that’s pretty awesome.

Also, I’d really like to play Rugby 7’s in the Olympics. I don’t play rugby at the moment, and I don’t know the rules, but I watched it when Australia won Gold. It was sweet.

Gold. Thanks Elise, you’re a champion in our book.
